Honoring Elliott Erwitt

Legendary photographer Elliott Erwitt passed away peacefully in his sleep today. He was ninety-five years old. His photos and his eye for humor have inspired me for years.

A dog lover, Mr. Erwitt published several books of his photographs of dogs, including one whose title is Son of Bitch.

When asked “Why photograph dogs?” he replied, “They make wonderful subjects, and never ask for prints.”

His sense of humor made a lasting impression, moving me to see a possibility and make this picture of my dog Lucky.

As a fellow photographer and dog lover, I wanted to honor a gentleman whose vision helped me become a better photographer.

What better way than making a picture of my dog Manny as we walked on a beautiful fall afternoon?

Today was just a start.

Elliott’s son-in-law Rick Smolan remembered him on this must-listen podcast: (link).

Thank you for your inspiration, Elliott. Rest in peace.
